Syrian National Council accuses Hezbollah of launching attack on central Syria

The opposition’s Syrian National Council accused Hezbollah of launching an “armed attack” on Syrian towns and villages, considering this to be a “dangerous threat” to the Lebanese-Syrian ties and the region’s peace and security. The Council said the Lebanese government has a “moral and political” responsibility to deter this “aggression.”         

In the details, the Council said that Hezbollah members “launched an armed attack on the towns of Abou Houri, al Burhaniyya and Sakraja in the region of al-Qusayr in central Homs, killing Syrian civilians.”        

In a related context, a Hezbollah source announced that 3 Lebanese Shiites were killed and 14 others were injured in confrontations in Syria, pointing out that they were in a self-defense position.          

Stances       

This as U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said that the international community is hesitating whether to intervene in the Syrian crisis or not since governments are wondering about the feasibility of engaging in a long-term war. Pillay renewed her calls to refer the file of the Syrian crisis to the International Criminal Court.       

On another note, International mediator Lakhdar Brahimi called on Sunday for talks between the Syrian opposition and an "acceptable delegation" from the Damascus government on a political solution to the country's 23-month-old civil war.               

After talks at the Arab League headquarters, Brahimi said negotiations could begin on United Nations premises. He gave no specific location.                   

The peace initiative announced last week by Moaz Alkhatib, leader of the opposition Syrian National Coalition, "has opened the door, and the Syrian government has said in truth that it confirms what it has been continuously saying, that it is ready for dialogue and for a peaceful solution.                       

Meanwhile, a Jordanian official source announced that the number of displaced Syrians who flocked to Jordan to flee the violence sweeping through their country exceeded 379,000.
