Rai calls on lawmakers to "step aside" if they are incapable of reaching electoral law consensus

Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros Rai hoped that all parties would agree on a new electoral law in Lebanon, stressing the need to find a law that restores balance among all sects.

Speaking from Beirut International Airport before heading to Moscow, Rai said that the Orthodox proposal guarantees all the people's rights, be they Muslims or Christians, adding that some parties confirmed that this law would have negative repercussions beforehand.

In the details, Rai mentioned that no party should find a law to satisfy its sole interest, pointing out that the laws should take in consideration the whole country and the people.

In addition, Rai considered that returning to the 60's electoral law is a shame for all the Lebanese after 5 years. Addressing politicians, he said: "If they are incapable of reaching an alternative law to the 60's electoral law, let them step aside. I still believe that a new and honorable law should be issued to unite and please all the Lebanese," he added.
