Moroccan police disperse Sahrawi protest during UN visit

Moroccan police violently dispersed on Monday a demonstration staged by separatists in the Western Sahara, according to the Algerian TV and rights activists, when the UN envoy Christopher Ross made a visit to the disputed territory.

The independent Ennahar TV channel broadcasted images of undercover Moroccan police beating Sahrawi men and women in Laayoune, chasing them in the streets and dragging some of them along the ground.

On the other hand, Ross flew to Laayoune on Friday for a four-day visit to the disputed region, in order to revive direct peace talks between Morocco and the Algeria-backed Polisario Front separatists.

The UN envoy travelled on Sunday to Dakhla, 500 kilometers (300 miles) south of Laayoune, and was set to leave the territory and head to Algeria's western Tindouf region on Monday to visit the Sahrawi refugee camps there.
