REPORT: Archeological treasure found in Beirut halts construction of commercial project

A large commercial project, designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel, was planned to be built in central Beirut, facing Riad al-Solh Square.

However, the mandatory archeological exploration preceding the construction of any building in this part of the city revealed the existence of an archeological treasure of great importance under the site.

The discovery led caretaker Culture Minister Gaby Layyoun to inform the owners of Landmark Project that they are no longer able to pursue the construction works.

This report will shed light on the discovery found in Beirut which consists of a Basilica dating back from the fourth century, an old roman road and the old wall of the city, as well as other archeological monuments. The report will also expose the position of Minister Layoun and the measures taken by his ministry in this regard.
