Beirut Bishop Matar meets with Caretaker Minister Charbel

Beirut Maronite Bishop Boulos Matar met on Friday with Caretaker Minister of Interior Marwan Charbel.

Discussions tackled the upcoming parliamentary elections, mainly the electoral draft law.

Bishop Matar announced following the meeting that the Orthodox Gathering's draft law is being "suspended", adding that deliberations concerning the hybrid law are underway.

Lebanon's rival parties are sharply divided over the electoral law that would govern the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Speaker Nabih Berri called on Wednesday for a parliamentary session on May 15 to adopt a new electoral law.

He had previously set a May 15 parliamentary session that would discuss the Orthodox Gathering's draft law for being the only proposal approved by the joint parliamentary committees unless an agreement is reached on an a new draft law before that date.

Several blocs and independent MPs are set to challenge it even if adopted by parliament, which will bring the country back to the 1960 law.
