The week of tightening the noose around Syria has escalated sharply: The hands tightening this rope belong to European, Turkish and Arab bodies. Turkey seems the most obstinate as their foreign affairs minister, who was quoted today as saying that the Syrian regime can no longer be trusted, will join the Arab foreign ministers meeting in Rabat on Wednesday; This position comes hot on the heels of his meeting with the Syrian opposition delegation.

The European Union also played its part in putting the squeeze on Damascus as the French foreign minister announced that it is time to discuss the means to protect Syrian civilians, hoping that the Security Council will eventually take a stance on this issue.

On the Arab level, the League of Arab States agreed to form a 500-strong delegation of representatives from Arab organization, media outlets and military personnel to monitor the situation on the ground in Syria. No specific deadline for the formation of this delegation was given.

This development comes at a time when Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem has announced that the Arab League decision to suspend Syria’s membership is “an extremely dangerous step”, adding that the Libyan scenario will not be repeated in Syria.

However, the most prominent Arab development was the BBC interview where Jordan’s King Abdullah called for Syrian President Assad to step down.

Damascus was a good sport in its response to the membership suspension as the Syrian Olympic Committee announced its withdrawal from the Arab Games that are scheduled to be held next month in the Qatari capital of Doha.

Also in the athletic arena, but away from the regional developments, we would like to point out that Lebanon will witness a major football event as our nation’s team battles South Korea in a decisive World Cup qualifying match at the Sports City Stadium in Beirut.
