EDL contract workers burn tires, block institution's entrance

Electricité du Liban contract workers burned tires and set garbage containers on fire before the sea-side entrance of the company in Corniche el-Nahr, the state-run National News Agency reported on Thursday.

This comes after EDL contract workers blocked all the gates of the company's building, preventing cars from entering the institution.

In this regard, the aforementioned workers voiced their rejection to the decision issued by the institution's General Director, Kamal Hayek, who requested from 470 contract workers -- whose contracts have expired -- to check in everyday as part-time workers.

EDL contract workers have been protesting for months calling on the government to employ them as full-time staff and to pay their salaries. Their protests have included shutting the gates of EDL headquarters in Beirut and disrupting normal work at the state-run company.
