Fireworks cause fire in Downtown Beirut, casualties reported

Fireworks launched on Thursday near the Martyrs Square caused a fire, while casualties were reported.

Civil Defense members rushed to the scene of incident and worked on extinguishing the fire, while the ambulances transferred the injured to nearby hospitals.

For his part, Red Cross Secretary General Georges Kettaneh told LBCI that 6 people were injured in the fire that broke out in the Martyrs Square, while the National News Agency reported that one person was killed and others were injured in the fire.

This comes as supporters of the Lebanese Army gathered at the Martyrs' Square in Downtown Beirut in a show of support to the military institution on its 68th anniversary.

The gathering was attended by the representative of the Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai, former minister Ziad Baroud, Sunnite, Shiite and Druze clerics, and various social, political, economic and media.
