US Ambassador Connelly meets Salam, Berri, Mikati

US Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly held separate meetings on Wednesday with Prime Minister-Designate Tammam Salam, Speaker Nabih Berri and caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati with talks featuring high on bilateral relations, the political and security situation in Lebanon as well as regional developments.

Ambassador Connelly reiterated her country's support to Salam’s efforts to form a new government, noting the US' view that Lebanon would be better placed to face current regional and domestic challenges with a fully-empowered government in place.

"As always, the US believes that government formation must be a Lebanese process and that the Lebanese people deserve a cabinet that reflects their aspirations and that strengthens Lebanon's stability, sovereignty, and independence while fulfilling its international obligations," she said.

After meeting Mikati, Connelly said: “As my time here in Lebanon comes to an end, I would like to underscore that the US remains committed to a stable, sovereign, and independent Lebanon.”

“The United States and the international community recognize that Lebanon is reeling from the spillover of the Syrian crisis. The best way to protect the country lies in strengthening the Lebanese state's institutions," Connelly added.

“In a bid to achieve this goal, the United States calls on all parties to abide by the disassociation policy and honor their commitments to the Baabda Declaration,” she stressed.

Separately, Connelly said that "Hezbollah’s 'unilateral' involvement in the Syrian conflict risks dragging Lebanon into that conflict and further compromising the Lebanese state".
