MP Aoun condemns Roueis explosion, says Lebanon entered a phase of terrorism

Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun denounced on Friday the blast that targeted the region of Roueis in Beirut's Southern Suburbs Thursday, noting that it should motivate the Lebanese leaders to form a new government.

“The Dahieh explosion signals lack of immunity in regards to such terrorist attacks. Anyone can be targeted directly or indirectly,” Aoun said.

MP Aoun also warned that Lebanon has entered a phase of terrorism, pointing out that the current period requires the strong rule of law.

In this regard, MP Aoun refuted claims that Hezbollah is paying the price of its involvement in fighting alongside the Syrian regime, adding that such a claim solely serve as a pretext since the Syrian conflict began long before the said involvement.

A powerful car bomb tore through the Beirut Southern Suburbs' region of Roueis, a stronghold of Hezbollah Thursday, claiming the lives of 22 civilians and leaving more than 300 wounded, some of whom are still receiving treatment.

The blast, a month after another car bomb wounded more than 50 people in the same district of the Lebanese capital, came amid sectarian tensions over the intervention of Shi'ite Muslim Hezbollah against Sunni rebels in Syria's civil war.
