Mikati advocates funding STL from Rome

Premier Najib Mikati confirmed to Vatican radio Sunday that he would resign if cabinet fails to approve funding the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), and revealed he is scheduled to hold talks with Pope Benedict XVI on Monday.

Lebanon was under international obligation to pay 49 percent of its share to the STL, set to try Premier Rafik Hariri's suspected assassins. A cabinet session to tackle said issue is scheduled to be held on Wednesday after Mikati's return from Rome.

"Lebanon is part of the international community and cannot be selective in application of international resolutions," said the PM.

Mikati added he would stress upon President Michel Sleiman's invitation for the Pope to visit Lebanon. "I will confirm for the Pope our keenness on common living despite all dangers facing us."
