MEA tightens screws on disobedient pilots

MEA maintained service to multiple destinations on Tuesday despite the 48-hour strike action carried out by its pilots’ union.

All flights to Dubai, Dammam, Cairo, Riyadh and Erbil got off the ground with 13 pilots that resigned from the pilots’ union, sidestepping the efforts to protest the firing of a terminally ill pilot.

The MEA executive board will meet on Tuesday to discuss their decision regarding strike action.

Pilots have gathered since Monday night in front of the arrivals and departures lounges of Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport in protest of the termination of one of their colleagues suffering from a terminal illness.

MEA chairman Mohamed El-Hout told LBCI that “each pilot refusing to take off will have his salary suspended,” adding that damages sustained by the MEA will be reduced from the disobedient pilots' salaries.

Hout also warned that further strikes will lead to the termination of the involved pilots.
