The conflict is believed to have killed at least 1,191–1,300 Lebanese people and 165 Israelis. It severely damaged Lebanese civil infrastructure, and displaced thousands of citizens.
On 11 August 2006, the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved UN Resolution 1701 in an effort to end the hostilities. The resolution, approved by both Lebanese and Israeli governments, called for the withdrawal of Israel from Lebanon, the deployment of Lebanese soldiers and an enlarged United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in the south. Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011, where more than 100,000 people have been killed and a total of 7.8 million of others displaced due to the violence, according to the United Nations' reports.
