EDL on-demand workers stage sit-in outside Jiyeh power station

The on-demand workers of Electricite du Liban gathered on Friday morning outside the Jiyeh power station, before staging a sit-in in protest of the company’s failure to pay their salaries for two months in a row.

However, this did not prevent regular EDL employees from entering the building in order to perform their duties, amid the heavy deployment of security forces in the vicinity of the station.

The EDL on-demand workers had kicked off their movement earlier this month, when they launched an open-ended strike calling for various rights and halting all work at related power stations.

The protesters issued a statement whereby they called for a series of demands, including the payment of their salaries for the month of August, as well as committing to the regular payment of the salaries at the end of each month. They also demanded the company to guarantee prevention and safety insurance for the workers, mainly for those who work at the electric power plants and generating stations, in accordance with the Labor Law.

Also among the workers’ demands were the issuance of a clear work schedule and the right to abstain from signing work contracts with contracting company, given that such solutions are only temporary.
