Hariri to Nasrallah: STL was funded and your speeches will not nullify it

Lebanese former PM Saad Hariri commented on Friday on Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s recent speech regarding the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, saying that it was obvious that Nasrallah was really annoyed by Mikati’s decision.

In a statement issued by his media office, Hariri said: “Sayyed Nasrallah is trying to put Future Movement MPs’ speeches in a sectarian context and hide the fact that they express the position of the majority of the Lebanese who oppose Hezbollah’s weapons”.

On the Syrian file, Hariri said that Nasrallah is trying to portray the Syrian revolution as sectarian and religious unacceptable clashes, adding that such claims are just like “rotten goods with no buyers” amid all the changes in the Arab Spring.

The statement added that “the stories recounted by Nasrallah are a thing of the past”, adding that Hariri not argue with Nasrallah about papers and documents signed by statesmen, officials and kings to reach a real reconciliation which will protect Lebanon.

“How come Hezbollah’s leadership, its Secretary General and the Shura council agree to fund a Tribunal which they deem as Israeli? Wouldn’t it be logical to say that after funding an Israeli tribunal they are committing national tertiary? Shouldn’t the ones covering up for this act of treason to be deferred to the Lebanese judicial system? Shouldn’t the ones who accept to stay in a cabinet funding the STL be accused of being false witnesses?”, the statement wondered.

The statement stressed that Nasrallah’s remarks that funding should be done through Arab and non-Arab donations, rather than from the pockets of the Lebanese are mere words which have no constitutional value. “Nasrallah’s discontent stems from blaming PM Najib Mikati for funding the STL and crystallized when Hezbollah SG pretended to be surprised by the PM’s announcement”, the statement added.

The statement emphasized that Nasrallah used this issue to urge the Premier to barter the STL funding with a political and administrative agenda set forth by the party and its FPM allies, paving the way for another political gridlock.
