Mikati stresses importance of security plan in Tripoli

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati stressed on Monday the importance of implementing tight security measures in Tripoli, urging officials to strike all factions attempting to incite strife in the northern Lebanese city.

Following a meeting with House Speaker Nabih Berri, PM Mikati noted that there is no alternative for the disassociation policy, stressing that it aims at controlling the security situation across various Lebanese regions.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon who support the revolt against Syrian president Bachar Assad while the area's Alawite community favors the said rule.

The city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to ongoing civil war in neighboring Syria, and the conflicted stances between the city's locals.
