MP Jumblatt mourns Kalashikov, says his creation helped millions

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat sent a cable to the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Bogdanov Thursday to offer condolences in the death of Mikhail Kalashnikov, the creator of the AK-47 assault rifle.

In the cable, MP Jumblatt said that Kalashnikov created a weapon that "helped millions of people fight occupation and oppression."

Jumblatt added that Kalashnikov became "a legend in the field of weapons without generating any personal interest or gain."

On Monday, Mikhail Kalashnikov, the creator of the famous AK-47 assault rifle, died at the age of 94.

He had reportedly been suffering from heart problems and was in intensive care since November.

Kalashnikov, who was in his 20s when he created the AK-47 just after World War II, died in his home city of Izhevsk.
