PSP leader Jumblatt says Chatah’s assassination will not end quest for moderation

“The assassination of a moderate and intellectual figure like martyr Mohammad Chatah, will not end the quest for moderation, dialogue and freedom of expression,” National Struggle Front leader MP Walid Jumblatt said on Monday.

MP Jumblatt also warned that 'falling into the trap' set by those behind the assassination of Chatah will only fuel extremism and sedition.

“Falling into the trap of the obscurantist ideology that targeted former minister Mohammad Chatah will drag the region toward further havoc,” MP Jumblatt told the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Anbaa, adding that “ending chaos could be an extremely difficult issue”.

In this regard, Jumblatt called for the dissociation of the country from regional developments, “to spare Lebanon tragedies fueled by the failure to form a new government as well as from a political, institutional and constitutional void”.

An explosion rocked the Lebanese capital Beirut on Friday, December 27, targeting the convoy of former minister Mohammad Chatah who was on his way to attend a meeting of the March 14 coalition at Beit al-Wasat when the explosion occurred.

About 70 people were also injured in the explosion.
