Rifi to LBCI: Tripoli will rebuild al-Saeh Library

Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi declared Saturday that Tripoli will assume the responsibility of rebuilding the al-Saeh Library, which belongs to Father Ibrahim al-Sarrouj and which was torched down on Friday night.

“We insist that Father al-Sarrouj remains in Tripoli, this is why we will rebuild his library,” Rifi said, stressing the need to protect Tripoli’s heritage and coexistence.

In a statement to LBCI’s Nharkom Said, Rifi condemned the act of burning the library, noting that Father al-Sarrouj never insulted any religion.

Rifi pointed out that the library was not completely damaged, but the losses are huge.

On Friday night, unknown assailants set fire to a famous library owned by Father Ibrahim Sarrouj in the northern city of Tripoli, after reports claimed that the father had published a book deemed insulting to Islam.

Al-Saeh Library is considered one of the most renowned libraries in Tripoli and the second largest in Lebanon.

Sarrouj says the library contains more than 70,000 books.
