Army Command says Abdullah Azzam Brigades member killed in Bekaa

The Army Command said a Palestinian suspect who was killed during clashes in the eastern Bekaa Valley was a member of an al-Qaeda-linked group.

Ibrahim Abdul Mohti Abou Moalaik, known as Abi Jaafar, succumbed to his wounds in hospital, the army said on Thursday.

He was shot after he attempted to flee a checkpoint the Lebanese Armed Forces had set up in order to stop him.

Abi Jaafar, a member of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, was driving a black Chrysler when he hit a soldier at the checkpoint while trying to escape.

He also opened fire at the unit deployed there, wounding an officer.

LAF members fired back at him, leaving him injured.

The army communique said the suspect was affiliated with the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and coordinated with ISIL's leader in the Syrian region of Qalamoun in a bid to smuggle suicide bombers to Lebanon and to carry out terrorist acts.

An ID in the name of Ahmed Omar Solh was found on him, the statement added.

Abi Jaafar's car was seized and the army is still searching for another suspect who had managed to escape.

The Abdullah Azzam brigades, a Lebanon-based al Qaeda affiliate, had claimed responsibility for the Nov. 19 double suicide attack on the Iranian embassy in Beirut, according to the Twitter page of a cleric linked to the group.

The brigades threatened more attacks in Lebanon until Iran pulled its forces out of Syria and their prisoners were released from Lebanese jails, the post added.
