One person killed as clashes ease down in Tripoli

One person identified as Houssam Wassel was killed on Friday evening in the northern city of Tripoli, as clashes eased down between Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhoods.

This as sniping operations continued, mainly at the International highway linking Tripoli to Akkar.

Meanwhile, a number of schools and universities closed its doors as Tripoli’s streets were deserted.

The death toll from Tripoli's clashes that started on Thursday rose to 11 while the number of injured persons reached 50.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli.

These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.
