STL issues new arrest warrants against Hariri's suspected murderers

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon said on Tuesday that it has issued new arrest warrants for Salim Jamil Ayyash, Mustafa Amine Badreddine, Hassan Habib Merhi, Hussein Hassan Oneissi and Assad Hassan Sabra, following the Prosecution's submission of a consolidated indictment.

"This indictment reflects the charges against all of the 5 accused as a result of the joinder decision issued on the 25th of February 2014," the STL said.

The Trial Chamber has now requested the Lebanese authorities to act on the mentioned arrest warrants.

International arrest warrants will also be provided to Interpol for circulation in other countries.

The charges against the accused remain the same.

The trial in absentia of the four suspects accused of killing Lebanese statesman Rafik Hariri opened in The Hague on Thursday January 16th, nine years after the bomb attack in which the former prime minister and 21 others died.

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon was set up by the United Nations at the Lebanese government's request to try the alleged perpetrators of the 2005 bombing.

The suspects - Mustafa Amine Badreddine, a senior Hezbollah figure and brother-in-law of slain Hezbollah commander Imad Moughniyeh, Salim Jamil Ayyash, Hussein Hassan Oneissi and Assad Hassan Sabra - remain at large.
