Security forces heavily deploy in Lebanon's Ain El-Helwe refugee camp

Around 50 security forces linked to the Palestinian Follow-up Committee deployed heavily on Tuesday in Ain El-Helwe's al-Fawqani street where clashes erupted Monday.

The situation resumed normalcy as shops, institutions and UNRWA schools opened their doors following intensive contacts to restore calm in the area.

Tension overshadowed the Ain El-Helweh refugee camp Monday, after rumors claimed that the Palestinian national Alaeddine Ali Hajir affiliated with the Islamist group "Fatah al-Islam” died of wounds sustained three days ago in the camp’s al-Fawqani Street.

In the details, supporters of Hajir opened fire in the air shortly after the news spread, triggering clashes between members of the Bilal Badr group and members of Talal al-Ourdouni group, leaving four people injured.

Accordingly, the Palestinian security committee kicked off its efforts to restore calm to the camp while sources from Labib Medical Center, where Hajir had been receiving treatment, denied reports of his death.

Tensions are often reported in South Lebanon's Ain el-Helwe, the largest Palestinian refugee camp in the country.

The camp is home to over 70,000 Palestinian refugees and their descendants, swelled to nearly 120,000, as a result of influx of Syrian refugees since 2011.

Ain el-Helweh, located near the southern port city of Sidon, is outside the control of Lebanese authorities, with Palestinian factions in charge of security.
