Lebanon's FM Gebran Bassil warns of Syrian refugee crisis
Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil warned against the huge influx of Syrian refugees into the Lebanese territories, noting that the number of the displaced Syrians now equals half of the Lebanese residing in Lebanon.

Bassil's comments were made on Thursday as he was received by the ambassador of Lebanon in Algeria, Ghassan Muallem.

"The Lebanese expatriates' enormous potential is capable of ensuring Lebanon's growth in spite of all the challenges, the latest being the displacement of Syrian refugees whose number now equals half of the Lebanese residing in Lebanon," Bassil said.

"Today the risk is immense with the unusual displacement of Syrian refugees. Around 275 thousand Syrian students are enrolled in Lebanese schools and a number of 400 thousand is expected to be added next year," he concluded.

Lebanon, an overburdened and under-resourced country, has been grappling with the rising influx of Syrian refugees.

More than one million refugees from Syria are now registered in Lebanon. The number is expected to reach 1.5 million by the end of 2014.
