Patriarch Rai calls for agreement, warns against spillover from Syria, Iraq

Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros Rai called on Saturday rival political parties to agree on a new president to spare Lebanon from the repercussions of the Iraqi and Syrian crises.

Rai's comments were made during a ceremony celebrated at the end of the "spiritual practice of the Maronite bishops," marking the first part of their annual Synod.

“Peace in Lebanon needs an exodus from the split between March 8 and 14 camps, which divided the country into conflicting parties,” he added.

Rai also said that reaching agreement, reconciliation and peace require much more courage than engaging in disagreement, conflict and war.

On Monday, Fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group began an offensive in Iraq taking a chunk of mostly Sunni Arab territory in the north.

The attack led by ISIL, which operates in both countries, has brought the Iraqi army to the brink of collapse.
