Military investigating Judge demands death penalty for 23 suspects
Military investigating Judge Fadi Sawan demanded on Monday the death penalty for 23 suspects accused of involvement in terrorist attacks and links to the al-Qaeda-affiliated Abdullah Azzam Brigades, the state-run National News Agency reported.
The suspects include an official in the Brigades identified as Naim Mahmoud Abbas, Jamal Daftardar, and Joumana Hmayyed who was driving a vehicle loaded with explosives on the Labweh-Arsal road in February.
Jamal Daftardar was charged with belonging to the Ziad al-Jarrah Battalion, which is linked to the Abdullah Azzam Brigades.
Nine of the suspects are in custody, while the remaining 17 are still on the run.
Abdullah Azzam Brigades spokesman Sheikh Sirajeddine Zouraykat is among the fugitives.
Judge Sawan also added the case of the Choueifat bombing to that of Abbas, the agency said, noting that they are both linked to an armed terrorist group seeking to carry out attacks in Lebanese regions.
Accordingly, arrest warrants were issued against the fugitives and their file was referred to the permanent military court.
