LU contract professors threaten to take escalatory measures

The Lebanese University's contract professors said Wednesday that "they will declare the university as stricken with political disputes, should the issues of the deans' appointment and the full-time employment fail to be finalized."

During a press conference, the professors threatened to take escalatory steps that might include a comprehensive strike, annulment of the second session of exams and abstention from opening the upcoming academic year.

"We reject any attempt to take over the university under the pretext of protecting the rights of the sects," they stated.

In this regard, the LU's teachers stressed the importance of their cause, reiterating that the decision to grant full-time employment remains a prerogative of the university's council, and that such a contract can be renewed on an annual basis.

LU contract professors have been on a continuous sit-in, calling for permanent tenure at the university.

The professors said their movement will not end unless the country's various political powers reach an agreement over the issue and meet their demands.
