Salam: Arsal situation can be resolved with the withdrawal of armed groups
Prime Minister Tammam Salam stressed Monday that agreements cannot be reached with the extremist groups who seek to transfer their harmful practices into Lebanon, noting that no leniency will be practiced in dealing with terrorists.

In a speech delivered following the extraordinary cabinet session held to discuss the situation in Arsal, Salam said that the only solution to the incidents occurring in the northeastern Lebanese border town comes in line with the withdrawal of the armed men from the region, calling on all the Lebanese factions to support the legitimate forces and the constitutional institutions in order to save the country.

In this regard, the PM pointed out that the cabinet will deploy every possible effort to provide the Lebanese army with everything it requires to defend Lebanon, revealing that he urged the French authorities to accelerate the delivery process of the weapons included in the deal agreed upon.

Salam stressed that Lebanon will get through this ordeal, as it did in the past, praising the residents of Arsal and reassuring them that the government will not abandon them during the current crisis.

During the session, Social Affairs Minister Rashid Derbass said, ahead of the session, that the cabinet has decided not to allow terrorists from Iraq's Mosul to reach Lebanon.

In turn, Minister of Culture Roni Araiji called on all parties to be "decisive," noting that the Lebanese army should be fully supported while defending the country.

As well, Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil said the sole initiative that should be taken is to back the military without imposing any conditions.

For his part, Health Minister Wael Abou Faour said Lebanon could enter the most dangerous phase yet if the political parties do not take a clear decision to support the army.
