Damascus stresses full support for Lebanese army in war on terrorism - statement
The Syrian Foreign Ministry said Monday that Damascus stands by the Lebanese army in its battles against armed groups in the border region of Arsal.

In a statement published by the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), a source from the ministry said he is confident that Lebanon will achieve victory over attempts aiming at fomenting strife and harming the country’s security and stability.

The same source said that the events taking place in Arsal, such as the attacks against civilians and army checkpoints, require immediate support for the Lebanese army in its war on terrorism and extremist Takfiri groups.

The clashes erupted on Saturday afternoon when Syrian gunmen deployed across the region of Arsal in retaliation for the arrest of Syrian national Imad Ahmad Jomaa at a Lebanese Armed Forces checkpoint.

16 LAF members were killed AFP reported, and dozens injured, while at least 20 soldiers were reported missing, presumed kidnapped by the gunmen during the clashes that left several militants also killed.

Jomaa was arrested while being transferred to a hospital after he sustained wounds during fighting on the outskirts of Arsal.
