REPORT: Speaker Berri says will not remain silent on current status quo

Speaker Nabih Berri said on Wednesday that he will not remain silent on the current crisis through which the country is passing, reiterating his rejection to the extension of the parliament's mandate.

Berri's comments were made during his weekly meeting with lawmakers whereby he asserted that he will exert efforts to activate the work of the parliament in a bid to elect a new president and to draft a new electoral law.

He concluded by saying that the pay scale issue will be tackled during the next legislative session.

Speaker Nabih Berri deferred on Tuesday (August 12) the session tasked to elect a new president until September 2 for lack of required quorum.

Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum after Michel Sleiman's mandate ended on May 25 with rival political blocs still divided over a new leader.

Prior to last week's session, nine electoral sessions were held, but parliament has failed so far to elect a new head of state due to lack of quorum.

Last year, the parliament extended its mandate to November 2014 citing security reasons as the motive.
