Army arrests brother of LAF soldier who reportedly joined armed groups in Qalamoun

The Lebanese Armed Forces conducted on Thursday several raids in the Akkar town of Kherbet Daoud and arrested Khaled Saadeddine, the brother of soldier Atef Saadeddine who reportedly defected a month ago, joining the ranks of armed groups in Qalamoun's barren range.

On July 23, a military source told LBCI that the incident of LAF soldier Atef Saadeddine, who had reportedly defected and joined the ranks of the al-Nusra Front, should not be blown out of proportion.

The source denied that any other soldier had defected; pointing out that Saadeddine was referred to the military court on charges of violating the laws of the military institution.

Jabhat al-Nusra is a branch of Al-Qaeda operating in Syria and Lebanon.

The group has been labeled a terrorist organization by the United Nations, the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. It has made repeated calls on members of the LAF to defect what it dubbed "the army of infidels" and join their "revolution to protect the Sunnis of Lebanon."
