LAF soldier killed for trying to escape -Islamic State

"We have executed one of the captured Lebanese Armed Forces soldiers for trying to escape," a commander of the Islamic State was quoted by Turkey's Anatolia news agency on Saturday.

"LAF soldier Abbas Medlej tried to escape from prison and after he attempted to open fire at IS members, we took control of the situation by slaughtering him," the Islamic State- Qalamoun branch said in a statement.

Medlej, who served at the Wadi al-Hosn army base, was captured on the first day of the deadly clashes that erupted in Arsal, a Lebanese northeastern border town.

The soldier was captured by a group affiliated with Abou Hassan al-Felastini and then handed over to the Islamic State.

He had also appeared in a video posted after the killing of Lebanese Armed Forces Sergeant Ali al-Sayyed.

"Security and party leaders in the Bekaa are working on controlling the situation and avoiding potential reactions to the execution of LAF martyr Abbas Medlej," sources told LBCI on Saturday.

On Thursday, militants of the ultra-hardline al Qaeda offshoot Islamic State executed Lebanese citizen Kayed Ghadada who hails from Arsal, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Ghadada was kidnapped from Lebanon's northeastern border town less than a week ago, the agency added.

Also on August 28, the Islamic State posted photos and a video online reportedly depicting a militant beheading a blindfolded hostage who was identified as Lebanese Armed Forces Sergeant Ali al-Sayyed.

Islamic State militants have also seized hundreds of Iraqi and Syrian soldiers as well as members of other insurgent groups, journalists and civilians. Some have been sold for ransom and others have been killed.
