Kataeb party leader Gemayel from Paris: First necessary legislation lies in electing a new president
Kataeb Party leader Amine Gemayel reiterated on Wednesday that the most important form of legislation is parliament's election of a new president.

“The presidential vacuum is a flagrant violation of the constitution, the National Pact and coexistence,” he said.

“Those who fear vacuum and are keen on democracy, should elect a president,” Gemayel, who is a former president, added.

The vacuum at the Baabda Palace “is the main reason for the extension of parliament's term,” he stressed.

Lebanon has been without a president since May. Rival Lebanese lawmakers have been unable to find a successor to ex-President Michel Sleiman over their disputes on a consensual candidate.

Fears that the presidential vacuum would spill over to other institutions have obliged the majority of MPs at the parliament to agree on the extension of their mandate.

Gemayel spoke prior to the legislative session on the extension. Kataeb MPs have announced they would boycott it.
