Trees to be planted in Sidon landfill

Head of Sidon municipality Mohammad al-Saoudi said Tuesday that trees designated for the city's landfill are now ready to be planted.

He also announced that the foundation stone laying ceremony for Sidon's public garden will be held on Monday, November 17.

The trash mountain, towering almost 20 meters high in Lebanon's third-biggest city, has partially collapsed into the Mediterranean several times.

The Sidon dump, originally created to dispose of debris from buildings bombed during Israel's 1982 invasion, threatens public health, marine life and the livelihood of fishermen.
