Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai reiterated on Sunday calls on political leaders to elect a new president, denouncing the current presidential vacuum at the Baabda Palace
“We pray to have political leaders who believe in state institutions and the presidency,” Rai said during Sunday's sermon held at Bkerke.
The patriarch reiterated calls on Lebanese MPs to head to the parliament and carry out their national duty by electing a new president.
Rai considered the president as the only one capable of protecting the Lebanese constitution and the people.
The deep political disputes between the Free Patriotic Movement and the Lebanese Forces have led to a lack of quorum in the previous electoral sessions in parliament, amid a boycott by the MPs of FPM leader MP Michel Aoun and Hezbollah.
Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum since President Michel Sleiman's mandate ended on May 25.
