LAF Command denies Kahwagi's comments over Israeli strike

The Lebanese Armed Forces command denied on Tuesday that LAF Commander General Jean Kahwaji made a statement to Asharq al-Awsat newspaper over the Israeli strike that killed a top Hezbollah fighter with five other members in Syria's Golan Heights.

“The army command entirely denies that Kahwaji made any remarks to the newspaper or any other media outlet concerning the airstrike,” it said in a statement issued.

Iran also declared that a senior Iranian general was killed in the strike, highlighting the extent of Iran's and Hezbollah’s involvement in the volatile region near Israel.

Sunday's deadly attack placed Hezbollah in a tough spot, as it plans carefully how to retaliate. A significant response risks prompting even harder Israeli reprisals, plunging Lebanon into yet another war with the Jewish state for which there is very little appetite among the Lebanese people.

According to Asharq al-Awsat Kahwaji stressed that “Hezbollah will retaliate in order to restore its deterrence, stressing that the response will not come from Lebanon to prevent any repercussions on the entire country and a possible new war with the Jewish state.”

“If Hezbollah responds from Syria then it will be a clear indication that the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel will transfer to Syria, temporarily,” Kahwaji allegedly told the newspaper.

He warned that Israel would then find “explanations” to target more positions in Syria, whether for the regime or Hezbollah.
