Patriarch Rai voices hopes French envoy Girault would be able to resolve presidential vacuum
Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rahi voiced on Tuesday hopes that French presidential envoy Jean-François Girault would be able to resolve the presidential vacuum at the Baabda Palace.

Before traveling to Rome, Rai hoped that Girault would “succeed in his mission.”

Girault arrived in Beirut on Monday for talks with the rival Lebanese leaders in his second visit to the country in more than two months.

The official has been dispatched by French President Francois Hollande to reach a breakthrough over the presidential elections in Lebanon.

The country has been plunged into a presidential vacuum since President Michel Sleiman's mandate ended in May last year.

Patriarch Rai was asked at Beirut International Airport about the Damascus bus bombing that targeted Lebanese Shiite pilgrims in Syria on Sunday.

“The world cannot go on in this state of violence, war, murder and destruction,” he said.

Rai is traveling to Rome to partake in the meeting of the College of Cardinals.
