Salam from Sharm el-Sheikh: Lebanon backs any stance that protects Yemen

Prime Minister Tammam Salam delivered a speech on Saturday night at the Arab summit whereby he noted that the delay in electing a new president in Lebanon hindered the work of the political institutions, adding that the presidential vacuum resulted in negative repercussions on the economy.

Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum since the mandate of President Michel Sleiman ended last May without the election of a successor.

As for the latest events in Yemen, Salam stressed that Lebanon backs any Arab decision that protects Yemen and the unity of its territory.

“We support the formation of a regional Arab military force to protect the security of the Arab countries and to fight terrorism,” Salam added.

Salam concluded by saying that Lebanon sought for and is still committed to the self-dissociation policy.

Saudi Arabia bombed the strongholds of Yemen's Shiite rebels and key military installations on Saturday; the third day of a campaign that military officials said was aimed at neutralizing air defenses ahead of a possible ground invasion.

The intervention that began early Thursday is aimed at halting the advance of the Iran-backed rebels, known as Houthis, who have allied with a powerful former president and seized several provinces.

The airstrikes have struck several provinces, including one rich in oil and gas, and opened a new front in the regional rivalry between Riyadh and Tehran. Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, a close U.S. ally, has fled the country, and the turmoil could bolster a powerful local al-Qaeda affiliate as well as militants inspired by the Islamic State group.

Arab foreign ministers at the Arab summit adopted on Thursday a resolution for the creation of an Arab military force, saying the Arab world was currently facing unprecedented threats.
