Head of the change and Reform bloc MP Michel Aoun said Tuesday that some parties are seeking to detach the presidency from all decision-making and the army command from all entitlements, noting that all that has been said about the security appointments is “not tangible nor legal.”
Following the bloc’s weekly meeting in Rabieh, MP Aoun stressed the need to prevent the election of “a shadow of a president.”
In this regard, he pointed out that the plan to extend the mandate of the army chief is being mulled in a bid to keep some candidates from being appointed.
“I never said that I want my son-in-law to be the next army chief, but I did say that I wish for the new commander to be appointed in accordance with the law,” he stated in reference to head of the Army Commando Unit Shamel Roukoz, stressing that the extension of the mandate is not permissible so long as the required measures are available.
