Interior Minister extends term of ISF chief by two years

Minister of Interior Nouhad Machnouq signed on Thursday a decree extending the term of Lebanon’s police chief by two years, one day before he was due to retire.

Several media outlets said the extension for Internal Security Forces leader Major General Ibrahim Basbous went ahead despite the disputes among ministers over the appointment of new security and military chiefs.

Proponents of mandate extensions say Lebanon cannot afford to risk vacuum amid security threats facing the country.

Opponents say term extensions violate the country’s Constitution.
