The Governor of Beirut Judge Ziad Shbib stated on Wednesday that an emergency plan had been launched to remove piles of waste from the streets of Beirut for posing a serious threat on public health and on the safety of citizens.
In parallel, civil society activists launched a campaign against the Lebanese government and officials who have failed to resolve the pressing waste issue, in a sustainable, eco-friendly manner, blocking various roads in Beirut.
Activist and whistleblower Tarek Mallah and three other activists were arrested Tuesday after blocking the road and allegedly assaulting the vehicle of Social Affairs Minister Rachid Derbass.
