LF leader Geagea hails Assir’s arrest
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea hailed on Sunday the security apparatuses for the arrest of radical cleric Sheikh Ahmed Assir, dubbing it an “achievement of major proportions.”
 
He wondered however: “How is it that Asir was apprehended, despite his disguise and fake passport, while the same security agencies failed so far to arrest the killers of Hashem al-Salman and Sobhi and Nadimeh Fakhri even though their identity was never made secret?”
 
Geagea’s comments were made via his Twitter account.
 
“How is it that these same agencies have not been able to stop street, drug, and kidnapping networks in the Bekaa region even though they are recognized and are still at large?” continued Geagea.
 
The Internal Security Forces’ General Directorate arrested on Saturday (August 15) fugitive hardline cleric Ahmad Assir, who was wanted for being involved in deadly clashes that resulted in the deaths of 19 army troops.

Security officials said Assir was arrested at Beirut International Airport as he was attempting to flee the country in disguise using a forged passport. The officials said that he appeared to have undergone several surgical operations to his face.   

The General Security added that Assir attempted to flee towards Nigeria via Cairo.

Assir is a radical anti-Hezbollah preacher who led clashes against the Lebanese Army in June 2013 from the Bilal al-Rabbah mosque in the neighborhood of Abra, Sidon, south of Lebanon.        

The clashes resulted in the deaths of 19 Army soldiers and at least 40 of combatants fighting for Assir.  
 
As for Salman, he was killed in 2013 in a dispute between supporters of Hezbollah and protesters near the Iranian embassy in Beirut.
 
Sobhi Fakhri and his wife Nadimeh were killed in 2014 in a crime carried out by fugitives from the al-Jaafar clan in Baalbek’s Btedei.
 
The armed men were fleeing raids carried out by the Lebanese army in the Dar al-Wasaa region when they entered the Fakhri house with the intent of taking their car to flee the scene.
 
The family refused to meet the demands of the gunmen, which prompted them to shoot the couple and their son.
 
None of the murderers have been apprehended so far.
