Cautious calm prevails over Ain al-Helweh refugee camp amid sporadic gunshots, following heavy clashes overnight that left two killed, including one member of the security forces and another civil society activist.
Meanwhile, officials are conducting the necessary contacts to restore normality to the camp.
On Tuesday night, the cease-fire agreement that was reached to put an end to the clashes that erupted between the mainstream Palestinian faction Fatah and hardline Islamists was breached.
The two sides exchanged heavy gunfire in the camp in southern Lebanon, which has regularly seen factional disputes spiral into deadly violence. According to sources, the clashes left several dead and injuries.
The sources added that the violence displaced a large number of the camp's inhabitants.
In this regard, the state-run National News Agency reported that the municipality of Sidon opened its doors to receive the families, adding that gunshots reached some neighborhoods in the southern Lebanese city.
Palestinian sources noted that gun battles started (August 24) when Islamist militants attempted to advance towards Fatah positions inside the camp.
