Speaker Berri says sectarianism is the main issue, reveals intention to call for dialogue in September

Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri stressed Sunday that “Amal Movement” supports the preservation of the cabinet, noting keeping the government active during this situation is a national need.

On the occasion of the 37th anniversary of Imam Moussa al-Sadr’s disappearance, Berri said that "attacking the legislation and the people is the biggest crime of all."

Addressing the protesters, he said that “the main issue in the current regime is sectarianism and deprivation,” urging them to call for a civil state and a new electoral law based on proportional representation, in order to build a better future for Lebanon.

In this regard, Berri revealed that he will call for a dialogue to be held in early September, and which will include Prime Minister Tammam Salam and the heads of parliamentary blocs.

"The dialogue’s agenda will contain items pertaining to the presidency, the work of the parliament and the ministers, the electoral law, the restoration citizenship law and the support for the Lebanese army and security forces," he explained.

Imam Moussa al-Sadr case:

On another note, Speaker Berri announced that the al-Zahrani - Tyre - al-Naqoura international highway will be named “The Imam Moussa al-Sadr Highway”, since the latter represents a national value for the Lebanese people.

In the same context, he pointed out that the Libyan authorities formed a special investigative committee tasked with the case of the imam and his companions, adding that the United Nations issued, for the first time, a recommendation to reveal their fate.

He also called on the Libyan authorities to make this case as a priority, stressing that it will remain of utmost importance.

Nuclear deal:

Commenting on the Iranian nuclear deal, Berri said that this agreement establishes new facts in the Middle East and rearranges the situations in the regional nations, hoping that this achievement will convince all the powers to halt the exploitation of small wars.

Syria:

On the Syrian crisis, the speaker stated that Syria under President Assad's leadership has been paying the price through a constant conspiracy, stressing the need to end the financial support provided for the terrorists.
