Teachers hold strike despite Minister Bou Saab’s threats

More than 90 percent of Lebanese teachers observed a strike on Tuesday despite the Education Ministry's threats that doing so would be illegal.

"We would really like to thank Education Minister Elias Bou Saab for his launched threats that led all teachers to partake in today's strike," Abdou Khater, the spokesperson of the Public Secondary School Teachers Association said during a news conference.

Bou Saab had announced a day earlier that he will take the appropriate measures against those who will participate in the strike.

"Threats like these risk the transformation of Lebanon's system from democratic to dictatorial," Khater noted.

The UCC, a committee formed of different public sector unions, had previously called for a strike on October 20, 26 and November 4 to urge Parliament to approve the much awaited payscale.

As for the review of the second round of official exams, the secondary school teachers reiterated their complete rejection to the re-correction.

Bou Saab also announced a day earlier that the results of reassessed second round official exams are expected to be declared later this week.
