“Handing over Gadhafi to Syrian authorities is a dream that will not see the light of day,” Rifi said in a statement.
He noted that his decision is hinged on the Lebanese laws and the principle of sovereignty.
“Some… have forgotten that Lebanon’s judicial system is based on justice and sovereignty,” Rifi added.
Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi rejected Wednesday the request presented by the Syrian judiciary, whereby it called for handing over Hannibal Gaddafi to Syrian authorities.
Earlier during the day, the attorney of detainee Hannibal Gaddafi, Bouchra al-Khalil said that an official memo was issued by the Syrian public prosecution to retrieve Hannibal Gaddafi.
On Monday, Investigative Judge Zaher Hamadeh issued an arrest warrant against son of late Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, Hannibal, on charges of hiding information in the case of disappeared Imam Moussa al-Sadr in 1978.
Sadr and his two companions, Sheikh Mohammad Yaacoub and journalist Abbas Badreddine, disappeared on August 31, 1978, during an official visit to Libya.
Hannibal had moved from Algeria to Damascus, where he was granted political asylum, after his father was deposed and killed four years ago, following the uprising in Libya. He is married to Lebanese Aline Skaff from Zahle.
