Introduction to the evening news 08-05-2012

The internal debate intensified amid the high-pitched statements addressed by Gen. Michel Aoun to President Sleiman, doubting the constitutionality of his election. He said we all know that His Excellency was elected amid exceptional circumstances.      

With an even higher rhetoric, Aoun attacked MP Walid Jumblatt, saying “I have the right to demand your trial and to strip you of your immunity; watch your language”.   

In light of these escalating statements, the cabinet is expected to convene tomorrow, and it seems that the public spending issue will not be settled soon.     

As for the abduction of Father Elias Maroun Gharios, it was strongly condemned especially that it reminded Lebanese citizens of the civil war. In this regard, President Sleiman said that despite the swift release of Father Gharios, such an act is unacceptable; it only provokes feelings and reactions.         

In Syria, many important signs emerged today: first, the ICRC chief announced that fighting has been so intense in parts of Syria that at times it has qualified as a localized civil war. Then Kofi Annan announced that he will be heading to Damascus in the next few days.        

The second sign is economic; in fact, Syria is facing a halt in imports of diesel and sanctions are hindering its ability to buy cereals.
