Karam’s defense attorney: Elements of the offence are not present

The Military court sentenced retired Brig. Gen. Fayez Karam to two years in prison with hard labor for collaborating with Israel; however, his defense attorneys confirm his innocence for the elements of the offence are not present.

Commenting on the verdict, Change and Reform Bloc said the decision is politicized and planned in advance while the opposition considered it as “attenuated” and does not measure up to the gravity of the offense.

Change and Reform Bloc MP Naji Gharios told LBC that any person accused of collaborating with Israel is usually sentenced to at least 15 years in prison or acquitted of the said charge, adding the moment the judge announced the verdict; it became clear for Karam that it was not based on the evidence forwarded by the defense attorneys.

Defense attorney Rachad Salameh confirmed that his client is innocent adding that the defense attorneys have the absolute tight to appeal against the verdict before the Military Court of Cassation within 15 days.

It was also reported that Karam passed out upon hearing the verdict and was transported to Hotel Dieu Hospital where he is under medical care.
