Williams meets with Hezbollah officials

U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams ruled out an Israeli attack on Lebanon, noting that Lebanon is the only country in the world whose sovereignty is being violated on a daily basis.

Williams told Al-Joumhouria newspaper on Thursday that Lebanon’s commitment to Security Council resolution 1701 was flawless, praising the current and previous Prime Ministers’ commitment to the international resolutions.

Asked about the reasons preventing Lebanon and Israel from “ending combat” and achieve a “permanent ceasefire,” Williams said that the end of combats since 2006 was effective; however, achieving a permanent ceasefire faces many obstacles such as the al-Ghajar village issue and Shebaa farms.

Williams met with Hezbollah’s international relations official, Ammar Moussawi to discuss a series of events in Lebanon and the region. Both sides praised the Lebanese government’s efforts in solving the electricity issue and stressed the importance of preserving internal security amid the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East and other Arab countries.

“The Lebanese government and its citizens have all the capabilities to face any external threats” Moussawi said after the meeting. He added: “We hold close ties with Syria and support its stability. The attempts by some Lebanese politicians to interfere in Syrian affairs will have serious drawbacks and are not in the best interest of the nation”
