Who are the 14 Islamist detainees?

The issue of Islamist detainees was brought to light on the political and popular levels in the past few days, especially in the city of Tripoli.       

The 14 released Islamist detainees were either arrested or turned themselves in to security forces in Tripoli on charges of belonging to Fatah al-Islam. They include 11 Lebanese, 2 Palestinian nationals, Mohammad Wehbi and Moussa Ismail, and Syrian Mounjed al-Fahham who tried to escape from prison with Walid al-Yastani, but was re-arrested by the prison's guards.       

Some of those detainees were in fact members of Fatah al-Islam and participated in organizational meetings, even trainings in the camp of Nahr al-Bared. However, investigations showed that evidence failed to prove that any one of them participated in the clashes with the Lebanese army. Even if they were convicted on charges of belonging to an armed group, they should have been imprisoned for maximum 3 years; the released detainees spent approximately 5 years in jail.       

Judicial sources told LBCI that the Lebanese Judiciary can summon the Islamists again to the trial that is expected to take place in summer to hear their words after the expected issuance of the indictment in the first half of July, especially that they were released on bail.
